What sensory tagging actually means

Most product descriptions are written to sell. "Gentle", "soft", "lightly scented" are adjectives chosen by a marketing team, and none of them tell you how strong the smell is relative to another bottle on the same shelf.

Sensory tagging replaces the adjective with a number. Every descriptor on a product carries an intensity from 1 to 10, submitted by reviewers who have actually handled the thing. Where several reviewers disagree we show the median rather than the average, because one person with an unusually strong reaction should not move the number very far.

That is the whole idea. It is not clever, but nobody else is doing it, and it is the difference between "lightly scented" and "scented: 1/10 across three reviewers".
